22.10.2008 Corsica wins song contest for minority languages
The fifth edition of the Liet Lavlut European song contest for minority languages was held last Saturday in Luleå (Sámiland, Sweden). Of the eleven competing songs, the number by Corsican singer Jacques Culioli would eventually claim first prize. Other numbers were sung in Breton, Galician, Welsh, Arbareshe/Calabrian and even Mordvinian, which is spoken in the Urals of Russia. The contest was held during the conference organised by the Council of Europe to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Although the contest still receives no financial support from the EU, the cup presented to the winner of Liet Lavlut is sponsored by the Council of Europe in recognition of the contribution the contest makes to the cultural wealth of Europe.
