29.05.2009 Newspaper articles available in ten European languages
On Tuesday, 26 May, a website was launched, which presents articles from various European dailies in ten European languages. The articles, all of which discuss aspects of European politics, are taken from 250 dailies, including Trouw, Le Monde, The Guardian and Der Spiegel.
The newspapers are scanned for articles pertaining to European affairs and politics, and those identified are translated into several languages. The site is currently offered in ten languages, including English, Dutch, Spanish, French and German, but there are plans to offer the content in all of the official EU languages by the end of 2010. This will ensure that every European can read and discuss the articles.
The site (www.presseurop.eu) has received subsidies from the European Commission, but its editorial policies are determined independently. Margot Wallström, Vice President of the European Commission, expects the availability of the articles in the various EU languages to broaden, enrich and expand coverage of European affairs.
A similar initiative for radio was already launched last year, and a one for TV has been planned for 2010. Click here to see the full text of the article.
