Text & Editing

Language always causes a great deal of controversy. Older generations often complain about the deteriorating level of Dutch with each subsequent generation. The reality is that correct spelling is becoming less and less common. While this is unfortunate, we mustn’t make a mountain out of a molehill. In our view, it is much more important that a text flows smoothly and that the content accurately reflects your ideas.

That’s where Overtaal focuses its efforts. Our text writers and editors are seasoned language experts who are capable of shaping any text to suit your wishes. Whether the text is a brochure, newsletter, web text, interview, or any other kind of document, we consult with you to ensure that we write exactly what you have in mind.

Based on your briefing, we draw up a draft document for you as the client to comment on. We then refine and polish the document to achieve the desired end result, producing a fluent, rhythmic text that you can completely identify with. And, of course, with everything correctly spelled!

The Dutch more frequently draft business and other correspondence in English, but they are not always completely confident about their linguistic abilities. At Overtaal, we have noticed growing demand for the editing of English texts.

Keep it simple?

According to Jan de Jong, expert in the field of speeches and presentations, oversimplified language is not appropriate in formal contexts (such as the 'speech from the throne' given every year by the queen of the Netherlands). It can come across as a bit ludicrous. Linguists and other language experts have concluded that increased simplification of language use can lead to misunderstandings and loss of comprehension. 'Clear' and 'simple' are, therefore, not always synonymous.
